ABOUT THE UME GROUP'S TRAINING ENSEMBLE PROGRAM
The Ume Group's Training Ensemble program is a 3-month long weekly course consisting of both teaching, learning, and creative components. Members of the training ensemble receive free training in a variety of physical disciplines ranging from Butoh and Japanese martial arts to yoga, gymnastics and contemporary dance.
On the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month, they join members of The Ume Group's growing learning community in their free and interdisciplinary "Open Training" sessions, serving both as participants and, once each quarter, as a guest teacher. On the alternate Tuesdays, the ensemble meets to create and refine short works of physical theatre revolving around a central theme and/or utilizing a new and specific creative process. Every three months the central themes and core creative process change. Each quarter culminates in an informal showcase & potluck at The Ume Group's rehearsal space on the Upper West Side.
Occasionally there will be other performance opportunities TBD.
This quarter will draw extensively on Butoh dance and gymnastics, focusing on the concept of "purity" in movement. The Lab sessions will be led by The Ume Group's own Producing Artistic Director, Jordan Rosin. Jordan is a movement artist and teacher whose in-depth study and practice of Butoh began in 2010 under Joan Laage in Seattle, WA. He has studied with such teachers as Vangeline, Diego Pinon, Tetsuro Fukahara, Ko Murobushi, and Katsura Kan and has been coaching gymnastics professionally since 2011. Jordan wrote and directed The Ume Group's BUTOH ELECTRA which received great critical acclaim, and most recently was seen performing in ISIS VARIATIONS in the New York International Fringe Festival.
