ABOUT THE UME GROUP'S TRAINING ENSEMBLE
The Ume Group's Training Ensemble program is a 3-month long weekly course consisting of both teaching, learning, and creative components. Members of the training ensemble receive free training in a variety of physical disciplines ranging from Butoh and Japanese martial arts to yoga,
gymnastics and contemporary dance.
On the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month, they join members of The Ume Group's growing learning community in their free and interdisciplinary ''Open Training'' sessions, serving both as participants and, once each quarter, as a guest teacher. On the alternate Tuesdays, the ensemble meets to create and refine short works of physical theatre revolving around a central theme and/or utilizing a new and specific creative process. Every three months the central themes and core creative process change. Each quarter culminates in an informal showcase at The Ume Group's rehearsal space on the Upper West Side. Occasionally there will be other performance
opportunities TBD.
WINTER/SPRING 2015 "The Ceili Ensemble"
This quarter the ensemble will learn, dissect and reconstruct traditional Céili dance- a Gaelic form of social dance used to commemorate places and events. Weekly trainings will build the ensemble's knowledge of Ceili and storytelling skills, and will draw on diverse inspirations like Butoh, Jones and Fitzmaurice techniques, gymnastics/acrobatics and sound painting.
